Launch – identity design

For the past few months, I’ve been working with the youth pastor at RFA church in Raleigh to build an identity for a new youth night. This night is an opportunity for young students to socialize together in a positive environment, and to have fun through group events – from movies to live music to parks.

As the event is exclusively designed for high school students, we wanted to create an identity that communicated youth, energy and relevancy using trendy modern design. The name “Launch” was chosen because the word means “to set in motion; initiate; embark”. It was also chosen because it implies the same idea of upward movement as “Elevate”, RFA’s youth service.

By connecting the “u” and “n” in the logo, a sense of fluid motion is created, emphasizing the meaning of the word. The three circular icons were designed to be used together or independently to further brand the logo, using them on pamphlets, buttons, and other media.

Winter Trip to Asheville

On a recent trip to western NC, my lovely Taylor and I explored downtown Asheville and the surrounding country. We stayed at Hotel Indigo, a newly opened modern-style hotel with a great view of the mountains, and only a block’s walk from downtown’s historic Grove Arcade. There we tried a few of the local eateries and restaurants, including Carmel’s and Early Girl (be sure to try the broccoli cheddar hushpuppies!).

On our second day, we drove through the country and up the narrow mountainside to the base of Mt. Pisgah Hiking Trail. Pisgah is easy to spot out because of the transmission tower at its peak. The 1.5 mile hike, with its 750 ft. elevation rise to the summit at 5,721 feet, was strenuous but well worth the view. From the top, you can see the Great Smokey Mountains, Mt. Mitchell, Cold Mountain, the Shining Rock Wilderness, and the city of Asheville.

Our final day there was spent exploring the city, from coffee houses like Broadway Street’s Dripolator to the unique vintage and boutique stores found downtown. Before we left, we stopped at Papas and Beer, now a personal staple-stop for me in Asheville, for the best authentic mexican in NC.

Boston Mass

A friend and I went Boston this past week for fall break/vacation. I had never been before, and she kept telling me how awesome the city was, so we decided to take a trip. We visited a lot of the fundamental spots – Faneuil Hall, State House, Freedom Trail – and some off-the-beaten-path local favorites (Sunset Grill & Tap has some great seasonal menu items). We even made a new friend while we were there; thanks for showing us around Ashley!

Boston is a beautiful city with lots of history, culture, adventure, and diversity. I knew it would be too nice a trip to not bring my camera. Here are a few of my favorites from the trip; if you’d like to see the rest of the photos from our trip,

Music Business: CD Replication

The digital era has made it easier than ever for independent artists/bands to present and market themselves efficiently and professionally. But for many starting out, it also brings up a lot of questions: How do we find a good recording studio? Where can we get cd’s made? What will A&R’s or management do to help us? How much does it all cost? I’m not trying to answer all these questions today, but I’d like to help with one or two.

After recording and art design, the next step is getting your cd’s reproduced. When working on CD art, a lot of bands ask me where to go and how much it’ll cost for different types of packaging, to help figure out which disc packaging is the right choice for them. I always work with DiscMakers because they’ve got awesome customer service, and usually have the best prices when comparing. I know there are other companies just as good, but I’ve had the most experience with them. Here is a pricing sheet I’ve put together for various packages and # of units, so you can easily get an estimate on how much different options will cost.

I hope this guide can help some of you when deciding which type of disc packaging to go with, and how many to get. If you have more questions on this or related topics, please comment! I will be more than happy to help out with anything I can!

Hi world, currently in the process of getting things updated, getting new projects up and running, re-branding and marketing. Dustin Owens Photography will now be a part of Harvey Dustin, which will include photography, design, graphics, music, among other things.
